Directions

  1. 1.Start with a known word (e.g., "cat") and change the vowel to make a new word.
  2. 2.Say both words aloud and listen for the vowel sound difference.
  3. 3.Complete the word-building chart by swapping vowels systematically.
  4. 4.Sort the completed words by vowel sound.
  5. 5.Write 2–3 original sentences using words from the activity.

Parent Teaching Tip

Vowel sounds are the hardest part of English phonics because they are the least consistent. Focusing on one vowel contrast at a time (short a vs. short i) is more effective than mixing multiple vowel sounds in a single session.
