Materials Needed

  • •Printed activity pages
  • •Pencil
  • •Optional: small snack items for the trail mix activity (raisins, nuts, crackers)

Directions

  1. 1.If using real trail mix, prepare the mix according to the recipe on the sheet.
  2. 2.Identify the total number of equal parts (denominator).
  3. 3.Count the parts of each ingredient (numerator).
  4. 4.Write the fraction for each ingredient.
  5. 5.Compare fractions: "Which ingredient makes up the largest fraction of the mix?"

Parent Teaching Tip

Fractions are abstract until they are connected to something real. The trail mix context makes numerator and denominator immediately meaningful — your child can see and taste the fractions. Eat the math when you are done.
