  • β€’Pencil
  • β€’Optional: decimal place value chart

Directions

  1. 1.Review decimal place value: tenths, hundredths.
  2. 2.For addition and subtraction, align decimal points before computing.
  3. 3.For multiplication, multiply as whole numbers then place the decimal point.
  4. 4.For division, move the decimal point in the divisor to make it a whole number.
  5. 5.Estimate the answer before computing each problem β€” compare estimate to result.

Parent Teaching Tip

Estimation is the most powerful error-checking tool for decimal operations. A child who estimates 4.2 Γ— 3.1 β‰ˆ 12 before computing will immediately recognize if they get 1.302 (a decimal point error) as wrong.
