  • β€’Pencil
  • β€’Optional: word cards for hands-on building

Directions

  1. 1.Review what a contraction is: two words joined with an apostrophe replacing missing letters.
  2. 2.Complete the "build a contraction" section: combine the two words and write the contraction.
  3. 3.Complete the "decode a contraction" section: write the two words each contraction represents.
  4. 4.Use contractions in original sentences.
  5. 5.Play "contraction concentration": match word pairs to their contractions.

Parent Teaching Tip

The apostrophe in a contraction marks where letters were removed β€” not where the words were joined. Teaching this distinction prevents the common error of placing the apostrophe between the two original words.
