Directions

  1. 1.Review the three parts of a strong paragraph: topic sentence, details, conclusion.
  2. 2.Choose a topic and write a clear topic sentence that states the main idea.
  3. 3.Add 3 supporting detail sentences, each with specific evidence or examples.
  4. 4.Write a conclusion sentence that restates the main idea in a new way.
  5. 5.Read the paragraph aloud and check: "Does every sentence connect to the topic sentence?"

Parent Teaching Tip

The most common paragraph weakness at fifth grade is vague details. Push your child to be specific: not "dogs are good pets" but "dogs provide companionship and can be trained to help people with disabilities." Specificity is the mark of a strong writer.
