Materials Needed

  • β€’Printed investigation pages
  • β€’Pencil
  • β€’Household materials to observe: rock, cotton ball, water, balloon

Directions

  1. 1.Gather 4–5 household materials before beginning.
  2. 2.Observe each material and record its properties: color, texture, hardness, flexibility.
  3. 3.Sort the materials by state: solid, liquid, or gas.
  4. 4.Record your sorting decisions and explain your reasoning.
  5. 5.Answer the analysis questions using evidence from your observations.

Parent Teaching Tip

The best matter investigation uses materials your child can actually touch, smell, and observe. Household objects β€” a rock, a cotton ball, a cup of water, a balloon β€” make the abstract concept of states of matter completely concrete.
