Materials Needed

  • β€’Printed worksheet
  • β€’Pencil
  • β€’Optional: number line or counters

Directions

  1. 1.Start with the "make a ten" strategy: show how 8 + 5 = (8 + 2) + 3 = 13.
  2. 2.Complete the practice problems, encouraging mental strategies over finger counting.
  3. 3.For subtraction, model "think addition": 13 – 5 = ? β†’ 5 + ? = 13.
  4. 4.Time one row of problems and record the time β€” repeat weekly to track fluency growth.
  5. 5.Review any missed problems by modeling the strategy again.

Parent Teaching Tip

The goal is fluency, not speed. A child who uses a reliable strategy consistently will develop speed naturally. Rushing before strategies are solid creates fact-counting habits that are hard to break.
