Directions

  1. 1.Review the transition word bank before beginning.
  2. 2.Read each pair of sentences and identify the relationship: sequence, contrast, cause-effect.
  3. 3.Choose the best transition word and rewrite the sentences as one connected sentence.
  4. 4.Write 3 original sentences using different transition words.
  5. 5.Read completed sentences aloud and check: "Does the connection make sense?"

Parent Teaching Tip

Transition words are the connective tissue of good writing. Teach your child to categorize them by function: sequence words (first, then, finally), contrast words (but, however, although), and cause-effect words (because, so, therefore).
