Materials Needed

  • •Printed frames
  • •Pencil
  • •Optional: colored pencils to color-code sentence types

Directions

  1. 1.Introduce the "hamburger paragraph" model: top bun = topic sentence, fillings = details, bottom bun = conclusion.
  2. 2.Choose a topic together before writing.
  3. 3.Complete the topic sentence frame first, then add 2–3 detail sentences.
  4. 4.Write a closing sentence that restates the main idea in a new way.
  5. 5.Read the completed paragraph aloud and ask: "Does every sentence connect to the topic?"

Parent Teaching Tip

Color-coding paragraph parts is one of the most effective scaffolds for young writers. Use one color for the topic sentence, another for details, and a third for the conclusion — the visual pattern makes structure visible.
