Materials Needed

  • β€’Printed worksheet
  • β€’Pencil
  • β€’Optional: base-ten blocks or place value chart

Directions

  1. 1.Review the place value chart before beginning: hundreds, tens, ones.
  2. 2.For each number, have your child identify how many hundreds, tens, and ones.
  3. 3.Use base-ten blocks or draw representations alongside the written work.
  4. 4.For comparison problems, use the symbols >, <, = and explain the reasoning.
  5. 5.End with a "build a number" challenge: "Show me 347 three different ways."

Parent Teaching Tip

Place value is the most important concept in second-grade math. Always connect the abstract numeral to a visual model. A child who can draw 347 as hundreds/tens/ones understands place value; one who can only write it may not.
